Which folding bike is better?

I am looking to get a folding bike to ride in around NYC. I don't want to spend too much money so I am down to these 2 brands Kent and Citizen. Does any one have one of these bike? What do you think of them? A Kent 16" is around 9 and a 20" Citizen is around 0. Is it worth the extra money to get a Citizen?

  1. Well, I think they’re a bit more money, but I have always thought that if I ever got a folding bike, it would HAVE to be a Strida!

  2. Get the Citizen, Kent makes the GMC bikes you see at Walmart and other places.

  3. In cycling, it is ALWAYS better to buy the best bike you can afford the first time around that way you have no regrets later and ask yourself this: " why didnt I spend a little more on that better bike?" I have a derailleur (just a deralleur, not the rest of the bike) that I paid $350 for last year. Does that put things into perspective? The bike its on was $8,000…..You get what you pay for! STAY FAR AWAY from KENT!!!!!!

  4. I don’t know either one but nobody can build a decent bike for $159 so I’d go for the Citizen. Personally I would prefer to buy a better quality pre-owned bike for the same money; it won’t look as pretty but it will still be going strong years after the Citizen or Kent have given up the ghost.

Looking at the bikes on the Citizen website I suspect they are all style and no substance; lots of air-brushed photos (America still has the weakest laws against false advertising in the World) of what are probably tacky, poorly built bikes that fall apart under strain. 6 gears on a sub-$300 sounds suspicious, gears cost money and I’d only expect 3 or just 1 on a bike of that price.

On a Brompton folding bike it costs an extra £150 ($250) simply to upgrade from a 3-speed to a 6-speed.
