Skeptic

I don't feel that the use of a 'week' is a waste at all. It may spur many existing riders to take the time and ride to work. New riders may get into cycling. Employers may become aware of the need to provide riders with lockers and clean up areas.... and most importantly.... secure lock up facilities for their employees bikes.

As a bicycle commuter you stand to gain from any exposure of cycling as an alternative travel option. Wouldn't it be great to have nicer bike paths and trails. Better facilities at work and retails shops for clean up, storage and secure bike lock up areas. And, most importantly, a driving public that is more aware of riders and rider safety.

To get those benefits we need people to ride to work as an example to show it 1) can be done and 2) that cyclists deserve the same benefits as drivers 3) that there are riders whose needs should be met. 4) encourage others to ride bikes as an alternative to vehicular travel.

No bad can certainly come from such a week!

I don't. It may just introduce cycling to a few people and show them how easy it is to get to work via 2 wheels vs. 4; especially for those that live a short distance from work.

I've always been curious how many first time riders this attracts. And how many stick with it. I wouldn't know - I'm retired! But, if it's within 5 miles from home, I take the bike. It's actually faster than a bus.
