What’s a good bike for really heavy riders?

I'm 300+lbs and was looking for a good, sturdy road bicycle for exercise and commuting. is there a particularly good manufacturer? What about steel vs aluminum or spoke counts? Thanks.

  1. yes there is many of them
    specialized probably makes one
just go to your local bike shop and they will help you out

  2. Any decent aluminum or steel road bike will accommodate your weight with no problem. If you stay away from carbon the frame won’t be the issue for you. The wheels will.

Spend some extra money on wheels with at least 32 spokes and heavy duty hubs. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself breaking spokes very frequently.

One easy way to do this is to buy a set of wheels that is designed for a tandem. Think about it. Tandems are designed to carry two people with a total weight in the range of yours or higher.

  3. i’d go with a cannondale

  4. Check with local bike shops they can help you out. Take a look at Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, Fuji, Giant, Raleigh and a few others. They all make a very good bike.

  5. Look at comfort or commuter bikes. A good bike shop will have a wide selection of these. They are becoming truly the general purpose workhorse for all those wanting to try riding again. They handle easily, ride comfortably, and are very safe to use.

I highly recommend either "V" style rim brakes or hydraulic (NOT mechanical/cable) disc brakes.

Frame material doesn’t matter nearly so much these days. Aluminum frames are now both sturdy and smoother riding than 20 years ago. Frame fit matters much more.

Wheel sizes I recommend for larger riders are wider rim and tire 26". The larger volume provides better comfort and increased durability. I would highly recommend a smooth tread. The smooth tread provides much better efficiency.

Stick with 32 or more spokes. Make sure to have the wheels tuned by a good mechanic. They will ride better and last longer.

Some good names are, in no particular order: Fuji, Specialized, Cannondale, Giant, Bianchi, Trek, Gary Fisher. All of these are reputable and have been around for many years. Just remember that the best bike is the one that fits and you enjoy riding.
