How to be visible when bicycle commuting?

What's the best way to be visible to motorists and other road users when I'm commuting by bike?

  1. Wear bright colored clothes, I wear the brightest yellow I can find. I might look kike a bumblebee, but it’s not a fashion statement, it’s much easier to see than a darker color. Use lights and reflective gear when riding at dusk or dark. I use a flashing taillight whenever I ride, even in daylight.

Follow the rules of the road, use hand signals, stop at red lights, etc. Drivers wil show you more respect if you do. Even still, you still need to ride defensively for the few drivers who have tunnel vision and are trained to look only for cars.

  2. wear reflective clothing.
use lights and reflective and brightly colored material on the bicycle.
bike defensively because some drivers’ really don’t care and can’t see bicycles

  3. I use a combination of headlight, blinking tailight, blinkie on my helmet, brightly colored clothes, refelctive ankleband when wearing pants, reflective material on any backpacks I may be carrying, and i even have a fluorescenet green reflective vest. I don’t use all of them at once, but a combination depending on the lighting situation and where I am going, etc.

the above suggestion of following road rules and riding defensively are excellent suggestions as well!

  4. reflectors and lights at night. there are many blinking rear lights available. front lights are a good investment too. spend a little on a good one. in daylight, use a bright vest. flo. orange or flo. yellow are the most visible. many vests also have reflective stripes. the more the better. but it is important that you ride as if YOU ARE INVISIBLE!!! people in cars will not look for you! you have to anticipate their actions.
