What do utility/commuter bikes cost?

I'm trying to get a new bike (I have a mountian/ city bike) for riding to my job over the summer, and I've been saving up. I have about 600 dollars at my disposal, and I want to know how much one would normally cost

$600 will get you a really good commuter. I looked at them today when I was at Performance Bike shop. They had several in that price range.

I have a commuting bike and it cost me $700. It is more of a racing bike, and if all you want to do is get to work you don’t need a real expensive bike. Just go to you local bike shop or Sport Chalet and look around. It is important that you do your research. Just don’t get something over the top with racing rims, disc brakes, a carbon frame or fork, or 27 or 30 speed. You don’t need 27 or 30 speed bike unless you do competitive racing.
