Should I get a folding bike or a hybrid?

i want to get one that i can throw in my car though (a honda civic..gosh).. i was thinking about a folding cruiser.. but those are about 418.00 cheapest. or maybe a hybrid (so i can take the wheel off the front) but those seem like it might either be a) too heavy/big or b) a giant hassle. i'm also 5'2" and 110 lbs so maybe a smaller size? any suggestions anyone?

  1. A hybrid will be lighter than a cruiser. Front wheel removal is not very hard, quick releases allow wheels to be removed in a few seconds. Releasing and reattaching the brake cable is a bit more involved, but once you learn how, it is very easy. What might be even better might be a flat bar road bike with side pull double pivot brakes, very easy to open for wheel removal. Folding bikes can be a hassle on their own, any folding bike will be heavier and more expensive than an equivalent conventional frame bike. The best type of car for carrying bikes inside is a hatchback, often bikes can be put inside without removing anything. If your car has 4 doors, it is easy to put a bike in the back seat, I can stow my road bike in my back seat in about 10 seconds, including the time it takes to remove the front wheel.

  2. Hey there Kasey.

Nothing against folding bikes, but a Hybrid would be a better choice for you.
There’s a couple reasons why I say this.

For one, a Hybrid bike is all-around a better bet. You can get a better exercise out of it without sacrificing comfort or paying too much.

As far as fitting it into your car.. It’s possible and I can give you a few pointers.
Take off the front wheel, and as someone mentioned, it should be quick release since it’s a hybrid.
In order to do that though, you would need an Allen wrench set to loosen the brakes. (It’s really simple)

Now you can also use the Allen wrench with the handle bar. Typically, you can swivel the handle bar up and down or twist it,and even remove it. This is so you have more room (in the width department). There is no need to take off the brake cables, so leave them attached to the handle bar.

Always be careful so you do not damage your car or the bicycle.

Otherwise, it’s a painless process that would not take you more than 3-5 minutes max, once you get the hang of it.

Hope this helps and let me know if I can help you with anything else!
