Is a folding bike OK on bumpy roads?

Hiya, im going to get a folding bike since my old bike got stolen.

in about a month im going to so a bike ride for BHF and because the road was very "bumpy" last time
so i was wondering would a folding bike survive in those up hill down hill condition?

  1. You probably want a folder because you can keep it in your flat? I agree with the others that the one you mentioned is probably a pretty flimsy commuter and won’t hold up under heavy use and not be comfortable on longer rides.

To get something that will be a good commuter and be able to do longer rides as well you really have to step up to a high quality folder like Bike Friday or similar. I mention Bike Friday because out of my embarrassing large number of bikes, if I could only keep one it would be my Bike Friday New World Tourist. I’ve traveled with it everywhere. It fits in a normal size suitcase that is < 50lbs with bike, tools, and case. I’ve rode 30-40 mile rides on it for both hilly and bumpy roads. Or you can just put it in a bag and take it on the bus or train. I’ve seen people do centuries (100miles in one day) on the road bike versions, but mine is set up more like a hybrid. It folds up and sits in the closet most of the time.

However this is probably significantly more than you wanted to spend. I think the least expensive ones will be in the $1000 range (about £650). But this bike with proper care will last nearly a lifetime and they hold their resale value pretty well. Buying quality only hurts once.

  2. Not that one, it’s too cheaply built. It will be very uncomfortable and may break.

Does it have to be a folding bike? If you need a bicycle to fit in the back of a car there are a lot of normal bicycles that will fit if you fold the back seats down and take the front wheel of the bike off.

I’d sooner buy a secondhand one but if you must buy a new one buy it from a real bicycle shop.

You don’t mention if the reason for the folder is because of the theft or just a personal desire. I would look to a regular bike, and look for a way to properly protect it from theft…. but, that would require a new Yahoo answers question with details of how it was stolen and where you store your bike.

A folder type bike was used in the Tour de France …. did you know that? Greg Lemond rode one in a time trial! He stood up the entire way…. But that was a relatively short ride, and after all it was Greg Lemond. You and I cannot hope to get such performance out of that type of bike.

On a long ride the folder will be measurably slower, rougher riding, and require much more stamina than the full size bike. I might use one as a bike to have on board a boat for weekend jaunts, but it would never be my choice for a primary rider.

So a good folder may survive the ride, but it wood take its toll on both the bike and rider.
