Is bicycle commuting a good idea for me?

i would really like to start commuting to work with my bike, but i have quite a few questions. please answer what you can. thanks!

i live 25 miles from my work (i live in johnstown, ohio and i work in delaware, ohio), is this too far to commute, the road is medium trafficed in most places and highly trafficed in one place?

what type of bike fenders would you suggest? my bike uses 27 inch wheels so they have to fit.

what type of panniers would you suggest? a rear rack?

anything else you can tell me that would help expedite the whole process would be great.

  1. I use a standard rear rack (TransIt about $14.00) and fenders (not too necessary in L.A.). I use a rack trunk everyday (lunch, tools etc) plus one of the panniers at the beginning of the week (for clothes to work) and at the end of the week (bring dirty clothes home). I ride 20 miles each way from La Habra to Los Angeles, about 1.5 hours each way. It takes some getting used to, riding with traffic. Use a mirror, but always verify by looking behind before changing lanes. Signal your intensions. Try to be courteous to those in automobiles- you will have to deal with the same people in cars everyday, but don’t be pushed too close to the curb/gutter. Wear bright refective clothing and have lights/refectors. Remember certain times of the year the sun will be in the driver’s eyes and they may not be able to see you (especially left turning cars). Read all you can on safe cycling.

  2. I think it might be too far for you.
25 miles each way is fifty miles total.
If you were an experienced bike rider, you would already know the answer to these questions.

you might want to ask this question over at bikeforums.net
